Making body scrub is an easy DIY body care project.

I started making my own body scrub years ago, and I make it every time I need a mini pamper.

I’m about 8.5 months pregnant, and one of things I have worried about my entire pregnancy have been stretch marks. I’m not sure what I’ll see after I give birth, but so far, I don’t have any stretch marks on my ever expanding belly (knocking on wood). Doing research on how to avoid stretch marks, I found most people recommended two things: 1. drink plenty of fluids, and 2. keep moisturized.

I looked at buying stretch creams and oils, but I wanted to get something  more natural than what I was finding in the stores. That’s when I remembered my body scrub recipe! I figured, not only is my scrub super moisturizing, but gentle scrubbing could help increase circulation which may help me prevent stretch marks.

There are a lot of different ways to make body scrub a.k.a. body polish, so I encourage you to personalize scents and add different elements to make this your own. The foundation of the scrub has two ingredients. You need a base/carrier oil and sugar to make body polish, but everything else is optional.

Required ingredients for sugar based body scrub (body polish)

  • Sugar – brown or white sugar work equally well
  • Oil – jojoba, almond, grapeseed, and coconut oils are all great options

I’ve made scrub almost every two weeks during my pregnancy and I’ve alternated between brown and white sugar. For me, it doesn’t make a difference, but if you prefer a less processed sugar, then you probably want to buy brown sugar.

As far as oils are concerned, I’ve tried jojoba, almond, and grapeseed oil. I prefer an unscented jojoba oil because find it to be a little thicker, and I think it absorbs better, but next time I’m planning to use coconut oil. For a quick grab, Trader Joe’s sells a “Vitamin E” oil that uses soybean oil as a carrier, and I think it would work well for this recipe.

Optional Ingredients for sugar based body scrub (body polish)

  • Vitamin E oil
  • Aloe Vera
  • Essential oils

When you’re pregnant there are many essential oils and herbs that are not recommended, so it’s important to do your research before adding any oils to your scrub. That said, for non-pregnant women (and men) there are many relaxing scents you can add to your scrub to personalize it and make it your own. If you plan to add essential oils, you should purchase an unscented base oil. Otherwise, the scent of your base oil will overpower the smell of your essential oils.

Okay, let’s get to the portions. Here’s the shopping list to make your own body polish.
