Vacations can be a big expense, but I think we all agree that they are an expense worth making.

While we can all dream of traveling, the hardest thing for me to think about is how to save the money it takes to takes to take a trip.

Can you make concessions?

The first thing to ask yourself when you think about taking a trip are what kinds of concessions can you make? For example, I dream of going to Fiji or Bora Bora one day, but these places are outside of my budget right now. Instead of giving up on my vacation, I’ve researched places that have the same vibe, but are still within my means like Antigua or the Dominican Republic. These place are incredibly beautiful, but they’re not as costly to visit. While, I haven’t made it to Bora Bora or Fiji yet, I’m not willing to sacrifice my vacation.

Can you think of a concession you can make that will make taking a vacation more feasible?

Save Throughout The Year

I made a coin collection jar and it helps more than you would think. I keep this sign with its big jar in

the laundry room and throughout the year I collect all of my spare change and bills that I find in the pockets of jeans and other clothing. Every once in a while I’ll throw in a little bit of birthday money, and I always add the dividend checks we get from our credit card as well as any money I make from selling items on craigslist and garage sales.

When we’re ready to take off for our “big” trip, we’ll empty the jar and use the money as our spending money while we’re on vacation. We don’t feel as though we’re sacrificing anything during the year and while we’re gone we’re not taking on extra expenses.

Look for Ways to Save During the Trip

Don’t limit your savings to home. Set a budget for your trip and don’t exceed it. I like booking my hotel through Costco Travel because some of their hotels offer “hotel credits” that I can use for excursions or spa treatments at their resorts. These credits are different than Orbitz credits because they don’t have strings attached. Using the credits are an easy way to get more out of your vacation without spending more money.

I hope these tips help bring you closer to your next vacation.
